Interfaces that hold up on a bad day

Typical build ยท 8 weeks +

Any tool looks fine with three tidy rows of demo data. The design work is in the states that show up on a Tuesday afternoon with four thousand rows and a failed sync.

The problem Why this track exists

Internal tools are usually designed for the happy path and then patched for everything else. The result is an interface where nothing is clearly more urgent than anything else, ownership lives in a spreadsheet beside the screen, and the states people hit most (stale, partial, denied, failed) were never drawn at all.

For SaaS teams, operations groups, and data-heavy back offices.

How it is built

Three decisions that shape it

Model the workflow, then the screens

We map what people are actually doing, in order, including the parts they do outside the tool. That map is what decides which screens exist. It also surfaces the handoffs (the moments where work changes hands and status has to be unambiguous), which is where most operational tools quietly fail.

Every state gets a design

Empty, loading, partial, stale, error, permission-denied, and no-results-but-filters-applied. Each one gets drawn and each one says what happened and what to do next. This is the single largest difference between a demo that impresses and a tool people trust at scale.

Keyboard paths and handoff specs

People who use a tool all day stop using the mouse. Tab order, focus return after a dialog, and shortcuts for the three actions that dominate the day are designed, not inherited. What we hand over is a component library plus written specs your engineers can build from without a translation meeting.

When to skip this track

Not the right track if what you need is a marketing site with a dashboard screenshot on it. If nobody is going to spend eight hours a day in the interface, this is more rigour than the problem deserves.
